Emerging from nature

This design is a proposal for a boutique hotel was inspired by past owners of the property who were pioneers of industrial and social change. It aims to create a sense of place which reacquaints the building with its surroundings and restores a natural balance between the cultivated and the wild.

Strong lines that emphasise the entrance area give way to swirling shapes which reflect the site's topography. Views are channelled and focal points positioned in key places to capitalise on the scale of the site and entice people into the grounds. Spaces have been designed into the garden to reflect the desire that guests have an immersive experience and use the grounds freely to unwind and maximise the enjoyment of their stay.

A grid-like framework forms the structure around the main building with a rectangular lawn and reflection pool that adjoins a terrace with views of the rural landscape and the kitchen garden. The site of an old observatory is used to rebuild one of a few bijou dining spaces, becomes a dramatic centrepiece from the main entrance when lit at night.

Grass terraces with elegant steps mark the transition to the wider informal part of the grounds; a hazel walk meanders around the perimeter to a secret view point, a rill babbles down a gentle slope into a natural swimming pool which forms a delightful focal point for those who wish to 'take to the waters' whatever the season – ideal for atmospheric lighting at night and, a tree-lined avenue creates drama and shadow play and marks out a grander, greener approach back to the front doorway.
